Selfless Service

The Hindu concept of “Seva” can be deemed an expression of yoga practice; it might be defined as spiritual action born out of compassion to serve others.

I’m keenly aware of the kind service and accommodation our various hosts have given to Daniel and me in our travels around the U.S. and Canada on this our most recent holiday.

Ken and Ron in Chicago, Joyce in Nanaimo, the Mulcahys in Sonoma, the Rengels in Marin, the Sandhills in Martinez, and ever graciously and often, the Kovtuns in beautiful San Francisco.

The wonderful thing about selfless service is that it makes you want to pay it forward, and, of course, that makes the world a better place.

An added boon: Perhaps the practice of serving others eventually brings us to the enlightened state that Hanuman speaks of to Ram in the Ramayana. The following is still one of my favourite quotes and sums up the ultimate state of yoga grace.

“When I don’t know who I am
I serve you,
When I know who am
I am you”
