We Had A Dream…Fulfilled

After the Rain

Eight years or so ago, Daniel and I got together with two other couples – Rick & Heather, Mike & Judy – and gave birth to the dream of forming our own small community. We bought a four acre property with a shed on Mitchells Island, NSW, in 2004. Then, we built a house to accommodate all of us which we moved into in 2009.

We’ve had a steady stream of visitors from around Australia and overseas and everyone who has seen our place and what we are doing here has been enchanted.

Our friend Peter has advised us on our landscaping and even gotten his hands dirty swinging a mattock and digging holes. The gardens he midwived are the envy of neighbours and friends and a daily joy to us at 2 Scotts Road.

I can see the gardens, lawns and pastures from the yoga room when I’m out in The Shed practising or teaching. There’s nothing to lift your spirits – and isn’t that what yoga is about? – like the colour, textures, and shapes of a garden vista.

Many people want to move to the country, want a gentler, simpler lifestyle, and want to live communally. I think those people who come to visit us see what we’ve done and that it’s possible for themselves.

There are ample opportunities for visitors to do yoga with us in The Shed. I’ll tell you what really makes my day. I love it when those who have never done yoga or are yoga drop-outs decide after practising with us to take it up on their return home.

Living together communally and practising yoga with others reflects a favourite Martin Luther King quote:

For some strange reason, I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. You can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be. This is the way our universe is structured, this is its interrelated quality.
